The National Pest Management Association advises homeowners to avoid water accumulation near a home's foundation by diverting water away with properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks to avoid dampwood termites. Also, reduce humidity in your Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach, Orange Park or St. Augustine, FL crawl space by encapsulating it and separating it from the earth.

Never bury wood scraps or waste lumber in the yard. Most importantly, eliminate wood contact with the soil. Maintain a one-inch gap between the soil and wood portions of the building.

The NPMA also recommends that firewood and scrap wood is stored at least 20 feet from the home. Seal all cracks and crevices in a structure, as well, to keep termites from forming new colonies in the wood through small holes. 

Unfortunately, even the best efforts at keeping termites out of a building can be futile. The University of Kentucky writes that discovering winged termites indoors (also known as “swarmers”) almost always indicates an infestation.
